The United States has placed sanctions on two top Indian aides of former Mumbai underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

The Treasury Department has named Chhota Shakeel and Ibrahim "Tiger" Memon as key drug traffickers.

The move is aimed at freezing their assets and curbing their access to global business and finance networks.

Dawood Ibrahim is accused of smuggling narcotics from Afghanistan and Thailand to the US, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa.

Superhero movie The Avengers has topped the US and Canadian box office for the second week in a row, taking $103.2m (£64m), studio estimates suggest.

US teen cleared of killing mother

An Indian appeals court has overturned the conviction of a US teenager who had been accused of slashing his mother's throat at an Indian resort in 2010.

Joncarlo Patton, who was 15 or 16 when arrested, denied murdering his mother, Cynthia Iannarelli, in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan.

He was arrested at an airport a day after she was found dead near the city of Jodhpur.

He was sentenced last year to three years in a juvenile detention facility.
