The sentencing of four top football referees in China on corruption charges is a major story in Friday's newspapers.

Beijing News and other regional papers lead with the story, which involved former "golden whistle" and top-level referee Lu Jun dubbed a "black whistle" (corrupt referee) and jailed.

He and three other defendants were sentenced to between three-and-a-half and seven years of imprisonment for bribery relating to match fixing.

Oil ‘not vital’ for South Sudan

South Sudan will survive despite halting its vital oil production in a dispute with Sudan, the country's Vice-President Riek Machar has told the BBC.

Oil revenues account for 98% of income for the country, which gained independence from Sudan last year.

But the two never agreed on the transit fees that Juba should pay for using Sudan's oil export infrastructure.

Mr Machar said development would be put on hold for several years, but basic services would not suffer.

He said government salaries, including for those for members of the large military, would be paid.

Militants claim Nigeria jailbreak

Armed men have broken into a jail in Nigeria using bombs and heavy gunfire, freeing 119 inmates, officials say.

A prison service spokeswoman told the BBC the armed men killed a jail officer during the attack, in the central Kogi state, on Wednesday evening.

Most of the prisoners were awaiting trial and none were high-profile detainees, according to officials.

Islamist militant group Boko Haram later said it carried out the attack, freeing seven of its members.

The group has carried out similar jailbreaks before, including a massive 2010 attack on a prison further north in Bauchi state.
