Story By: by Bob Boilen

Attack Attack! demonstrate why it's called Crabcore. Somehow, there were eight genre names we like even less than this one.

It started innocently enough. Someone used the words "indie-pop," which is a term that gets under my skin because it describes music more as a business model and not its sound. From there it took no time to get my NPR Music officemates sharing the genre terms that make them bristle. In seconds, we were throwing around Crabcore, Witch House… Read More

The alternative map for 2012 visitors

Monday, January 30th, 2012

With the Olympics and Queen's Diamond Jubilee, tourism in the UK faces a massive year. The Magazine asked people born outside the UK to describe the part of the country that, for them, sums up a more unusual aspect of British life. Here are a selection of those choices.

Durness, Scotland (Kelsey Morse, Tain, Scotland)

Hailing from the flat lands of Indiana, United States, I've been known to act embarrassingly awestruck at different locales throughout Scotland. None more so than on a cliff's edge in Durness, Scotland's most northwesterly point. Standing hundreds of feet… Read More

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

However, the April drop might suggest that hiring will slow during the summer, as employers take time to absorb recent new hires, said Conference Board economist… Read More

Plant-Zone Map a Boon to Growers

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a new map of the nation's growing zones Wednesday that confirms what many gardeners and farmers already know: Winters are warmer.

The map—widely used as a guide to what areas are suitable for a plant—is divided into zones based on the average lowest winter temperature, in 10-degree increments. Many of the areas that shifted into a warmer zone are in the Northeast, and many were on the edge of a warmer zone in the… Read More

Western Sahara profile

A mainly desert territory in north-west Africa, Western Sahara is the subject of a decades-long dispute between Morocco and the Algerian-backed Polisario Front.

In October 1975 the International Court of Justice rejected territorial claims by Morocco and Mauritania. The court recognised the Saharawis' right to self-determination and Spain agreed to organise a referendum.

The peace plan provided for a transition period, leading to a referendum in January 1992. Western Saharans would choose between independence and integration with Morocco.

Minurso was to total 1,000 civilian and 1,700 military… Read More

Damaged Dubai Creek barrier poses risk to the public

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Young children have a limited perception of risk in their environment and whilst trying to be independent, lack some balance and co-ordination skills that older people have. Therefore, they can easily find themselves in dangerous situations, especially when a protective barrier contains gaps or openings large enough for a child to be able to pass through. Parents should always take precautionary measures to help keep children safe and are also responsible for keeping their children under their control. But, is playing not a regular part of any child's life? At the Dubai Creek people come with their families to relax and have fun, but this… Read More
