Court: Jared Loughner can be forced to take anti-psychotic medication

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

(CNN) -- Bizarre and suicidal actions of Arizona shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner have pushed a federal appeals panel to reverse an earlier decision and allow authorities to force him to take anti-psychotic medication.

The three-judge panel for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals based in San Francisco had ruled on July 12 that Loughner can refuse anti-psychotic medication.

But since that ruling, Loughner, who has been diagnosed as schizophrenic, has deteriorated, prosecutors said.

He's had screaming and crying fits that last hours, he has harmed himself and claims that the radio was inserting thoughts into his… Read More

Senate Dems block Boehner debt plan after House OK

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Washington (CNN) -- House Speaker John Boehner's plan to raise the nation's debt ceiling and slash government spending narrowly passed his chamber on Friday and then was blocked by Senate Democrats, setting up a weekend of negotiations to seek a deal that would avoid a potential federal default next week.

The Senate vote was 59-41 to table the measure, which effectively kills it unless Democrats decide to bring it up again.

Earlier, Boehner's proposal was approved by the House in a sharply polarized 218-210 vote that was delayed by a day while the speaker rounded up support from wary tea party conservatives. No Democrats… Read More

1. Whither Nnamdi?: Even while some teams might still be learning how to say his name, plenty of clubs will be angling to pay the 30-year-old former Raiders cornerback, who is the obvious grand prize in this year's free agency class. Asomugha may not have a catchy Revis Island-like moniker, but the four-time All-Pro has the track record, with opponents seldom even trying to throw in his direction (according to ESPN he has allowed just 52 pass completions… Read More

Business As Usual

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott accompanied his league's football coaches to New York this week for a two-day preseason media tour. The itinerary included stops to Sports Illustrated, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. But he managed to sneak in some business, too.

On Wednesday morning, a room full of executives and lawyers representing the conference and four different cable companies haggled over the details of an elaborate plan four months in the making. By 5 p.m., Scott was standing at a press conference in Chelsea, announcing a finalized deal for carriage of the newly created Pac-12 Network and… Read More

Bloomberg: Why U.S. has to get off coal

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Editor's note: Michael Brune is executive director of the Sierra Club. Michael R. Bloomberg is mayor of New York City. Bloomberg Philanthropies recently donated $50 million to the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign.

(CNN) -- One of the frightening new realities in Washington is that many strongly held policy positions are built on untruths. One of the most persistent untruths is that we can't afford to move away from coal-powered electricity.

The truth is, we can't afford not to quit coal. The cost consumers pay for power does not reflect the true cost of burning coal. Pollution… Read More

Washington (CNN) -- Rep. Luis Gutierrez and 10 other people demonstrating for immigration reform were arrested Tuesday outside the White House, the U.S. Park Police and a spokesman for the congressman said.

Douglas Rivlin, the press secretary for the Illinois Democrat, said Gutierrez and the other people arrested "were sitting on the sidewalk in front of the White House after being told to leave" the protest, held to mark the more than 1 million people deported since President Barack Obama took office.

"The U.S. Park Police gave them a warning to leave. After the third warning they were put in plastic handcuffs… Read More

Rewriting NCAA rulebook

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Most of the college sports fans who read Michael Rosenberg's humble suggestion to the NCAA probably had a similar gut reaction. How could you? What about amateurism? What about the purity of college sports?

Stop it.

College sports at the highest levels have never been pure, and everyone knows it. As for the amateur ideal, that never really existed, either. You're mad because you don't want major college sports to be different from what you grew up with (even though they already are). You think you're a purist, but you aren't. If you were a purist, you would… Read More
